Silves

The municipality of Silves  covers an area of around 678 Km2  and has approximately 11,000 residents.

Silves is an attractive town of jumbling orange rooftops scattered above the banks of the Rio Arade. It boasts one of the best-preserved castles in the Algarve,  attractive red-stone walls and winding sleepy backstreets on a hillside.

There is a Medeival festival held in August every year in and around the castle walls and if you really want to get into the swing of things then you can swap your everyday clothes and rent a medieval outfit – if you are brave enough to take the heat.

Not much happens around town, but it’s a good base if you’re after a less hectic, non coastal Algarvian pace.

The distric of Silves contains the places of Tunes, Silves, São Marcos de Serra, São Bartolomeu de Messines, Pera, Armação de Pêra, Algoz and Alcantarilha.
