The winter months in the Algarve

The Algarve is a very popular destination to spend the winter. The temperature in winter is usually around 18 degrees with a nice sun. The wonderful mountain and beach walks are then very popular with visitors. The weather is often still very mild and pleasant and therefore perfect to enjoy the beautiful surroundings in the Portuguese winter sun and to escape the cold!

January Weather

The weather in the Algarve in January is on average 15°C. The sea temperature is around 17°C. On days when the sun shines, this can rise from 17°C to 20°C. January is the coldest month in the Algarve, but compared to the cold winter months here in the Netherlands, the temperatures are still very mild. The Algarve has a Mediterranean climate, which refers to the countries around the Mediterranean Sea. This means that the winters are very mild and pleasant, and the summers warm and dry. The Algarve has nice temperatures for a winter sun holiday. If it does happen that there is precipitation, it is usually short showers that do not last long.

Towards Spring

The weather in February is similar to January with an average temperature of 15°C. From March onwards towards spring, the temperatures slowly start to rise again. From then on, the average temperature is around 17°C and this only increases as we move towards summer. There is usually no precipitation at all by then, and the sun shines more and more.

Winter activities

There are many popular activities in the Algarve at this time of year. For example, take a lovely walk in the mountains, be enchanted by the beautiful scenery and enjoy the fresh air. A walk along the beach is also very popular with visitors to the Algarve in winter. If you don't feel like walking, then a lovely bike ride along the beautiful coast is also highly recommended. Boat trips take place all year round, so this is also possible in winter. Sail for example to the beautiful Benagil cave or the Ponta da Piedade. Is the weather not so good? Then you can also go shopping, visit museums or taste Portuguese wine!
