Buying a property in Portugal was a dream for Niels and Carlijn van Duijn. For years, they imagined a new life filled with sunshine, peace, and nature. In 2024, they finally took the leap and moved to Portugal.

Their journey began in the Alentejo region, but soon their hearts were drawn further south, to the Algarve, known for its rolling hills, open landscapes, and authentic Portuguese charm.

Together with one of the estate agents and an in-house assistant, Niels and Carlijn set out with Divine Home to find their dream home – a place that reflected their vision of a peaceful life in the Algarve. Then, in April 2025, everything fell into place.

“We weren’t looking for a ruin, but neither were we looking for a house that was already completely finished. It shouldn’t be too big or too small, and it had to offer the potential to make our dream a reality. In terms of location, it needed to be private, but not too remote. Basically, everything in between.”

It wasn’t an easy search, but estate agent Hellen found what seemed impossible: the perfect Algarve home, even before it was officially on the market. When the Divine Home estate agent showed them the estate, it was love at first sight. A hidden paradise, exactly as they’d imagined it.

Today, Niels and Carlijn are bringing new life to their home in Portugal at Alma do Vale. They’re restoring the house’s old soul, welcoming nature, animals and guests, and embracing the peaceful rhythm of rural life in the Algarve.

They welcome guests and have turned their dream into reality.
